The Homemade Clean · by Betty Sutton
The Homemade Clean is educational. It shares homemade cleaning methods that have worked in real homes, written to help a careful person clean their own house well and safely. It is not professional advice for your specific situation.
Never mix cleaning products. Some combinations are dangerous — bleach with ammonia, with vinegar or any acid, or with rubbing alcohol can create toxic gas. Use one cleaner at a time, with ventilation, and keep products away from children and pets.
Test first, and know your surfaces
Always test any cleaner or mix on a small, hidden spot before using it on the whole surface. Homemade acids (vinegar, lemon) can etch natural stone and harm some finishes; the book tells you where those lines are, but the final judgment on your own home is yours.
Not a substitute for a professional
Homemade cleaning does not replace a licensed professional where one is needed — a plumber for a real clog or leak, an electrician, or a qualified remediation service for serious or recurring mold, or a pest professional. If a problem is beyond routine cleaning, stop and call someone.
Results vary
Every home, stain, and surface is different. We can’t promise a particular result on your specific problem, and some stains and damage simply can’t be undone.
Your responsibility
